Il presidente degli Stati Uniti Joe Biden, pochi giorni fa, ha firmato il National Defense Authorization Act , che stabilisce la spesa per la difesa di Washington per il prossimo anno fiscale.
La legge è stata approvata lo scorso dicembre dal Senato con 89 voti a favore e 10 contrari e dal Congresso, dove è stata sostenuta da 363 deputati contro 70.
Il budget prevede di concedere ai programmi di difesa, sia al Pentagono che ad altri dipartimenti – come il programma nucleare supervisionato dal Dipartimento dell’Energia – 768 miliardi di dollari. Questa somma supera la precedente più grande spesa militare, che era di 740 approvati per il 2021 durante la presidenza di Donald Trump. In realtà è addirittura superiore ai 752,9 miliardi che il Pentagono aveva richiesto .
La legge prevede un aumento del 2,7% degli stipendi delle truppe, oltre a maggiori spese per acquisti di aerei e navi rispetto a quanto previsto dal Dipartimento della Difesa. Incluse anche le spese considerevoli relative a Russia e Cina.
Da un lato è previsto lo stanziamento di 4 miliardi di dollari all’Iniziativa europea di deterrenza, destinata a contenere le presunte minacce provenienti dalla Russia in Europa, nonché la concessione di 300 milioni ai militari ucraini e 150 milioni alla cooperazione militare nel Baltico.
Per quanto riguarda il contrasto alla Cina, la Peaceful Deterrence Initiative riceverà 7,1 miliardi di dollari.
